The rules for success
I am not quite old enough to remember much about the USA's President Lyndon Johnson, except maybe his polling theme, "All the way with LBJ". I know even less about his political career or how he is remembered by his former constituents. What I do clearly know, and deeply appreciate, about this man is that he provided us with an example of how to succeed.
In the world of warehouses and workshops, stores and stock bays, maintenance targets and management meetings, our time is often spent discussing minute details, precise processes and technical specifics. There is nothing wrong that. After all, if we don't discuss these things who will?
However, I am sure you will agree that these topics are just grist in the mill of our daily working lives. Doing these things well may help us create a successful career, but they do not necessarily help us create a successful life.
LBJ, by almost any measure, was successful in both his career and his life. Sure, he addressed the technical specifics his career demanded, but he worked hard on issues that fell outside his job.
Here are his ten rules for success.
1. Learn to remember names.
2. Be a comfortable person so there is no strain in being around you. Be an old-shoe kind of individual.
3. Aquire the quality of being relaxed so things do not "ruffle your feathers".
4. Don't be egotistical.
5. Be interested in people so that they get something of value from being around you.
6. Study to get out the "scratchy" elements of your personality, even those of which you may be unconscious.
7. Sincerely attempt to heal every misunderstanding between you and others.
8. Practice liking people until you learn to do so genuinely.
9. Never miss an opportunity to say a word of congratulations.
10. Give spiritual strength to people and they will give genuine affection to you.
